Description of Programs/Riders

Therapy is designed to strengthen tone and stretch muscles. All riders must fill out a rider packet that describes the person's handicap. Once the Pegasus staff reviews the packet the rider is assigned to a group with specific exercises on horseback.

Pegasus serves a multitude of handicapped organization as well as independent living riders. Classes are tailored to the individual disability.

Pegasus Riders come from The Palm Springs Unified School District, The Desert Sands Unified School District and the Coachella Unified School District severely/multiple handicapped classrooms. This includes, elementary, middle and high school children. These riders arrive by specially equipped school buses for 1/2 hour riding therapy Wednesday, Thursday or Friday depending on the riding day they have been assigned, between the hours of 8:00 am - 11:30am.

Riders come to Pegasus on Wednesday and Thursday from The Foundation for the Retarded and The Angel View Crippled Children's Foundation. These riders also come to Pegasus in handicapped equipped school buses.

The Riverside County Office of Education-Handicapped Division sends classes to Pegasus from its special schools within the existing facilities of the school districts.

The Stroke Recovery Center sends stroke survivors of all ages and disabilities. These riders come to Pegasus on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday by private automobile. Some stroke survivors find equine therapy so beneficial that they come to Pegasus for riding sessions two days a week.

Pegasus also has riders coming to its facility from The Braille Institute, as well as riders recommended from The Autism Foundation, Dennis James Cerebral Palsy Foundation, Private Physicians and Physical Therapists.

Saturday Riders include those who are home-cared by families and represent a cross section of disabilities. Pegasus Saturday therapy sessions start at 8:00 am and end at 12:30pm. These riders arrive via private transportation.
